William’s Story
Born out of personal experience, passion and self-education, William The Garbage Truck and Crew was created in 2007 by James Martin, II.
A few years ago, James, like most people, didn’t fully understand the intricate relationship between the earth and human beings until he inadvertently damaged the environment himself. While landscaping his home in Connecticut, he cut down trees on his property and was immediately fined and instructed to replant. Determined to be more environmentally aware, James educated himself intensely on global warming and conservation. The more he studied, the more driven he was to make a difference. So he replanted the necessary trees but didn’t stop there. He also committed to a daily conservation and recycling routine for himself and his family. Now armed with information, James is dedicated to educating adults and children about how to make our planet a safer, cleaner place to live.
William The Garbage Truck is his first step. James had once promised his four-year-old son that he would create a storybook character of his very own. Young James III showed an excited interest in garbage trucks whenever they rumbled down the street. Young kids love garbage trucks and garbage trucks recycle; it seemed the perfect fit. So James consulted for weeks with his son about William’s look and image to create the smart, caring, child-friendly character who would teach children about going green. Father and son agreed that William would need friends and that these friends should help the environment as well, and so The Crew was created. The entire series will take place in the fictional city of Jamestown (inspired by the real life city of Greensburg, Kansas).
Through William The Garbage Truck and Crew, James and his son hope to teach young kids how to go green in a fun, exciting way.
